Vicksburg's diverse history all evolves from its position on the Mississippi River. Barges moved cotton up and down the river during the time of King Cotton. The Civil War saw Vicksburg's landscape dominated by gunboats and soldiers. The river also brought a great diversity of culture as Native American, Lebanese, Italian, Jewish and Asian people made their homes on the hills of Vicksburg. Today's visitors find a rich tapestry of culture weaving through Vicksburg's varied museums and historic tours. The impact of the river, King Cotton and the Civil War can be traced in the museums' collections and interpretations and in the lore of historic sites. The city's former glory is obvious in its preservation of churches, government buildings and scores of homes - many dating to the 19th century. On the lighter side, tourists delight in seeing the first place in the world where Coca-ColaŽ was bottled. Kids of all ages enjoy viewing a vast collection of antique dolls and toys. Adults revel in all the opportunities for play at the four river casinos. The 16-mile tour of the Vicksburg National Military Park and a visit to the U.S.S. Cairo Museum are musts for history lovers. The simple markers on the graves of 17,000 Union soldiers are a stark reminder that Vicksburg's past includes tragedy and suffering. Carriage rides, garden strolls, ghost tours and river tours round out the experience to mesmerize and entertain every member of your group.
