MEET THE FOLKS BEHIND THE FOOD:“The Southern Foodways Alliance Oral History Initiative at Year Three” Photo Exhibit Monday – Friday (8am-12pm) and (1pm-5pm)FREE ADMISSION at the The Southern Cultural HeritageCenter. This photo exhibit, featuring portraits of fifty individuals chronicled by the Southern Foodways Alliance Oral History Initiative, celebrates the unsung and uncelebrated men and women whose work has helped keep alive Southern Foodways. The Southern Foodways Alliance is an institute of the Center for the Study of Southern Culture at the University of Mississippi. It is a member-supported organization of more than 800 people, including chefs and academics, writers and eaters. The organization’s mission is to document and celebrate the diverse food cultures of the American South, and this traveling exhibit is just one component of their documentary endeavors. 2007 marks the third year of the SFA Oral History Initiative, which is directed by Amy Evans. A native of Houston, Texas, Evans brings her skills as an interviewer, artist, and photographer to these projects, and she manages the work of SFA members whose interviews have also contributed to the archive. The oral history initiative has, to date, collected over 300 interviews, chronicling the lifework of Southerners who grow, prepare, serve, and consume food and drink. These stories, as told by photographs, interview transcripts, and audio recordings, are archived at the University of Mississippi and are available online at www.southernfoodways.com.
The traveling portrait exhibit brings attention to the cooks, chefs, restaurateurs, and producers whose work has helped keep alive Southern Foodways. It aims to highlight the import of maintaining those traditions on which Southern cuisine, its regions, and its identities are built. The exhibit will be on display at the Southern Cultural Academy Building through June 23-July 23. For more information on the work of the Southern Foodways Alliance, visit www.southernfoodways.com. |
