The contributions of African Americans to the culture and history of the South and the nation are highlighted in Vicksburg's wealth of African American historical sites.
The contribution of African American soldiers for both the Union and Confederate armies is commemorated inside the Vicksburg National Military Park with the Mississippi African American Monument located between milepost 4.3 and 4.4. The siege of Vicksburg shows some of the first instances of African American soldiers serving in combat.
Other African American historical sites include the Beulah Cemetery -- Vicksburg’s largest African American cemetery with over 5,500 graves containing the city’s most prominent African American families.
You can learn about the history of African American churches at the Bethel AME Church. Dating back to 1875, Bethel was the first African Methodist Episcopal Church in Mississippi. This is also the site of Campbell College, the first African American College in Mississippi established without the aid of whites, which was located in a building behind Bethel Church.
The Jacqueline House museum is Vicksburg's only museum exclusively dedicated to the culture and history of African Americans in the area. Here you'll find thousands of historical items ranging from slave artifacts, photographs and books to newspapers and even rare ephemera.
