Memorial Day Weekend
Celebrate America at Lake Fest on Saturday May 26th! Lake Fest will be from 10:00 am -5:00 pm along Eagle Lake Shore Road by the Old Cotton Exchange. There will be live music featuring The Chill and the Guilt Ridden Troubadors. A silent auction, food, kid’s games, raffles and flea market vendors will also be present.
There will also be Memorial Day events at the Vicksburg National Military Park. The 3rd United States Colored Cavalry living history presentation will be in the park on Pemberton Avenue portraying African-American involvement in the Union Army during the Civil War. The cavalrymen will be present from 9:30 am – 3:30 pm each day with ranger talks and demonstrations. That evening with the support of the Friends of Vicksburg National Military Park and Campaign and the Four Seasons of the Arts, the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra will present a free concert, “Symphony at Sunset,” at 7:00 pm at the Visitor Center, 3201 Clay Street to help honor Memorial Day and the 200th Anniversary of Mississippi’s statehood. Preceding the 7:00 pm concert will be a performance by the Patrick Smith Band at 6:00 pm. Visitors should park at the Outlets at Vicksburg, and a free shuttle service to the concert will be provided. Shuttles will begin departing the Outlets at Vicksburg at 5:00 pm.
The Vicksburg Memorial Day Parade is set for Monday May 28th at 10:00 am in downtown Vicksburg honoring the men and women who have lost their lives serving in the United States military. After the parade there will be a ceremony at the Vicksburg National Cemetery in the Vicksburg National Military Park. The National Park Service in conjunction with local veterans and the 3rd US Colored Cavalry will host the remembrance event, including a flag-raising ceremony at 1:00 pm. Parking in the cemetery will be limited to those with limited mobility.
Vicksburg is home to several great summer shows! Mark your calendars for June 18th through June 23rd for Miss Mississippi Pageant Week. Vicksburg has been the home of the state pageant for over 60 years and several activities surround the crowning of Miss Mississippi. The Guinness Book of World Records’ longest running show, Gold in the Hills, presents its summer season July 6th-7th, 13th-14th, 20th-21st, 27th-28th. Each performance begins at 7:30 p.m. at Parkside Playhouse. Cheer the hero and boo the villain during this interactive theatrical performance! The 5th Annual Ritz on the River is going retro on July 19th featuring The Molly Ringwalds at Retro Prom. Wear your favorite era’s prom outfit and join the fun at the Vicksburg Convention Center.
What’s better in the summer than getting outside and enjoying some fresh air? The Star Spangled Night Run 5K run and 5k walk will be Saturday June 30th at 8:00 pm beginning at The Southern Cultural Heritage Foundation, 1302 Adams Street. The run will be throughout downtown Vicksburg. After the race there will be a party in the SCHF courtyard with music, food and fun for participants and volunteers. On Wednesday July 4th the City of Vicksburg will present the Independence Day Fireworks Extravaganza at the riverfront with live music by Dr. Zarr and the Funkmonster. Music begins at 7:00 p.m. with the fireworks starting at 9:00 p.m.
Tara’s Mississippi River Nature Weekend is an exciting family festival for the outdoor adventurist, both young and seasoned this August 24th through 26th. The festival is highlighted by nature’s Wading Bird Migration in the Mississippi Flyway. Weekend activities include mountain biking, kids’ kite flying contest, live music, open-air bus birding tours, wildlife management seminars, canoeing on the Mississippi River with Quapaw Canoe Company and more!
