Tasty Community Cooking Events for Everyone to Enjoy
On Saturday, January 28th, the grounds surrounding Lady Luck Casino will be home to one of the region’s most famous cook-offs. Competitive teams will be presenting their best chili recipes in hopes of taking home the braggin’ rights of having the best chili in town! Now in its 8th year the competition is expected to have over 20 teams in the running. First place winner, in addition to braggin’ rights will receive $200 in cash and a trophy. The second place winner will receive $100 in cash and a trophy and limited braggin’ rights and the third place winner will receive a trophy and some braggin’ rights. There will also be awards for People’s Favorite and Most Festive Booth. The fun begins at 11:00 a.m. and goes until 3:00 p.m. Proceeds benefit the Warren County Children’s Shelter. On Monday, February 13th St. George’s Orthodox Church will be serving up what has been one of Vicksburg’s favorite meals at the Lebanese Dinner. For 58 years St. George’s has prepared kibbe, cabbage rolls, sambooski, taboli, baklava and a bounty of other Lebanese treats. You can dine in or carry out. The congregation of St. George’s will serve over 3,000 dinners so be sure to get there early. A delicious selection of home-baked treats will also be available for purchase.
On Saturday February 25th there will cooking and dancing in the street in front of the Southern Cultural Heritage Center at the 6th Annual Carnaval de Mardi Gras and Gumbo Cook-off. The event will being at 5:00 p.m. immediately following the 15th Annual Downtown Mardi Gras Parade. Over 15 teams will be in the running for braggin’ rights with the first winner taking home $200 in cash. Live entertainment will be presented by Legal Tender. Admission is $10 for adults and includes gumbo and a beverage. Children’s tickets are just $5 and include gumbo and a beverage. Additional food and beverage purchases will be available. You can purchase tickets at the door or in advance at the Biedenharn Coca-Cola Museum. All proceeds benefit the Vicksburg Foundation for Historic Preservation.
