Vicksburg’s Charming Downtown

Looking for ways to get into the “fall-iday” spirit? Time’s been a little tough to track the last year and a half, and it’s hard to believe that we’re already thinking about Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas… wasn’t it just 2020 a couple of weeks ago?

Thankfully, Vicksburg has everything you need to start feeling that autumn magic, right in its charming and comfortably walkable downtown. Packed with unique goodies and gifts to bring home with you, architectural art to stir the senses, and hearty meals you can enjoy on breezy patios, Downtown Vicksburg’s got the boutiques, antiques, and good eats to suit any taste.

Fall-Forward Fashion & Gifts

Shop specialty clothes, gifts, and collectibles at Cinnamon Tree on Washington Street. The owners here have an eagle eye for the latest seasonal trends, from patterned-sleeve sweaters to bold autumnal florals. But fashion isn’t the only reason to stop by—you’ve gotta grab some locally made cheese straws and fudge while you’re here.

Just down the road is Sassafras, a home décor paradise with a cornucopia of tabletop accents, handmade dishware, Mississippi gifts, and more. Everything you need to deck out your dining room, kitchen, and living room is at your fingertips, just in time for holiday entertaining.

If you’ve got kiddos in the family, you can’t miss Peterson’s, where you’ll find Mississippi’s largest collection of Melissa & Doug children’s toys, Usborne children’s books, and baby clothes to boot (perfect for adorable holiday cards!). Grown-ups have plenty to peruse, too, like regional cookbooks full of delicious goodies and P.J. Harlow pajamas to get cozy in while you bake the night away (or call it a day with a glass of rosé).

Last but not least, a stop at Levee Street Marketplace is guaranteed to surprise. Antiques, vintage furniture, high-end clothing, décor, records… the possibilities are endless. Get lost in an afternoon here picking through this showcase of treasures to find that perfect piece. And pick up a homemade treat—they’ve got delectable local desserts, jellies, salsas, and more.

Architectural Marvels

On Walnut Street, right in the center of downtown, you’ll find Vicksburg City Hall, designed by renowned architect James Riely Gordon in 1894. Wrought in the traditional Southern style, its curves, columns, and cupolas arrest the eye, while its creamy neutral color soothes—it’s a Beaux-Arts beauty that has withstood the test of time.

Down the street and around the corner, you’ll find Gordon’s Alley and the Wings on Washington Murals, a community art project brightening the streets of downtown. Sponsored and created in part by a local high school, this colorful showcase truly does uplift any and all who see it—and it’s a super spot for an Instagrammable photo-op, too!

Discerning onlookers also have the chance to view six authentic Tiffany stained-glass windows at the Church of the Holy Trinity. These scenes of holy comfort and peace date back to the late 19th century, mesmerizing generations of worshipers and visitors as the sunlight plays against intricate colors.

Breezy Outdoor Dining

For mid-day comforts or afternoon pick-me-ups, try the Bohemia Café & Bakery. This European style café serves up sweet and savory treats, as well as your favorite cozy warm beverages for fall. Enjoy a hearty soup with fresh bread, or indulge your sweet tooth with a beignet or Nutella crepe.

A perfect spot to refuel for lunch or dinner is the Cottonwood Public House & Key City Brewery. The warm wooden bar and chic exposed bulbs help take the chill off your bones as you sip a craft beer and nosh on some gourmet pizza (adobo spiced chicken, anyone?). For beverages, we recommend Mississippi Queen blonde, the beer that famously sold out its first batch in just 6 days.

And when the day is through and you’re ready to unwind with a glass of wine or a fine cocktail, look no further than Cocktails 101. Let yourself feel fancy in this spacious ultra-lounge as you enjoy a dinner of blackened seafood pasta with Cajun Pontchartrain sauce or a perfectly cooked ribeye steak.
