Brush Up on Your History at Mississippi Battlefield Tours

Vicksburg, Mississippi is well known for its rich history, and for good reason – the area hosted one of the Civil War’s most momentous battles. Now, Vicksburg and other communities throughout Mississippi commemorate the state’s past with historic battlefield sites that can be viewed through immersive, exciting tours. Here are a few of the most notable.

Vicksburg National Military Park

It’s no secret why Vicksburg National Military Park appears on nearly any list of must-see Mississippi attractions. The sprawling complex is spread across over 1,700 acres of pristine land and packed with more than 1,300 memorial monuments – more than 95% of which were built before 1917. It’s also home to the renowned USS Cairo Gunboat and Museum. The park features a lengthy tour road, as well as a hiking trail that offers access to magnificent natural features and key historical monuments. Other options include informational driving tours with licensed battlefield guides and the cell phone driving tour, which allows you to access interesting site descriptions by phone.

Brices Cross Roads National Battlefield Site and Tupelo National Battlefield

Brices Cross Roads commemorates a remarkable battle where Confederate cavalrymen overtook a much larger combination of Union cavalry and infantry. The actual National Battlefield Site at Brices Cross Roads measures only an acre, but much of the historic battlefield has been purchased and preserved by organizations committed to telling its story. Most of the area must be toured by car, though a host of interpretive trails allow your party to step outside.

Just a short drive south of Brices Cross Roads lies Tupelo National Battlefield, another worthwhile destination on any history buff’s itinerary. Both attractions are several hours from Vicksburg, so hitting the two in one shot is likely the most convenient option.

Shiloh National Military Park

This popular Corinth, MS site is even farther from Vicksburg, but mirrors Vicksburg National Military Park in terms of historic importance. You’ll find the preserved Shiloh battlefield, a separate unit detailing the Siege and Battle of Corinth, the Shiloh Indian Mounds and numerous additional points worth visiting. This expansive park is best experienced through the 12.7-mile, self-guided auto tour. Other options include an audio auto tour and ranger-led programs that take place daily.
