The Keys to Vicksburg Trip

Tour our Downtown District and Historic Old Town to learn the culture and history of this remarkable river city. The Siege of Vicksburg had a huge influence on our history but the city was also influenced through other periods of time which can be interpreted at our museums, tour homes, and on walking tours.

Day 1: Check into your hotel or bed and breakfast inn and plan to dine at one of our signature Vicksburg restaurants. After dinner, take a Haunted Vicksburg or Historic Walking Tour through Vicksburg’s Old Town. (2 hours)

Day 2: After breakfast, plan a day to tour Vicksburg’s historic homes. We have 12 homes that are on tour year-round and available by appointment. Whether you are interested in antebellum or Victorian-era architecture, we have beautiful homes with fascinating stories to tell. (3 hours)

Have lunch at one of our downtown restaurants known for great cuisine. Whether you are in the mood for Southern dining at Walnut Hills, farm to table options at Main Street Market Café, rooftop dining at 10 South, blue plate specials at the Klondyke, famous Delta tamales at Solly’s Hot Tamales, or fried green tomatoes and catfish fillets at Rusty’s Riverfront Grill, we have something for every palate and taste! (1 hour)

After lunch, start your study on the Campaign for Vicksburg at the Vicksburg National Military Park. Watch the 20-minute film which recounts the campaign and then start your tour of the park. Along the 16-mile tour road the park includes 1,325 historic monuments and markers, 20 miles of historic trenches and earthworks, a 12.5 mile walking trail, 144 emplaced cannons, a national cemetery and one historic home – The Shirley House. The only remaining ironclad gunboat from the Civil War, the USS Cairo is also on display inside the park. (3 hours)

Day 3: After breakfast and coffee, head to Catfish Row Museum which features an ever revolving display of art exhibits. (1 hour)

Try lunch at one of Vicksburg’s many restaurants. (1 hour) Head out on a city tour with one of our National Park Service licensed guides for a true experience about the culture and history of Vicksburg. (1.5 hours)

After your tour head to Catfish Row and check out the Vicksburg Riverfront Murals which depict periods of history in Vicksburg. The murals consist of 32 life-like pictorial murals by Robert Dafford and 1 abstract mural by Vicksburg artist Martha Ferris which recognizes three vital arteries feeding Vicksburg’s diversity—the river, the railroad and the highway. (1 hour)
