A hotbed of activity during the American Civil War, Vicksburg, Mississippi has much to offer for both casual tourists and dedicated history buffs. Among the city’s attractions are museums that afford guests an in-depth look into the area’s background and culture.

A Glimpse Into The Past

Founded in 1811 and incorporated as a town in 1825, Vicksburg has a rich history, which can be explored at the many museums in the area. 

Visitors curious about life on the Mississippi River should visit the Jesse Brent Lower Mississippi River Museum, which explores the river’s relationship with local society. 

To learn more about Vicksburg’s role in the Civil War, head to the Old Depot Museum to view an expansive diorama of the Siege of Vicksburg. Stop by the Civil War Museum which features a diverse collection of artifacts from that era, and then take in the USS Cairo, a Union gunboat that sunk in 1862 and is now displayed at Vicksburg National Military Park. 

Finish off an already exciting trip with a self-guided tour of the stunning Old Court House Museum with a plethora of artifacts on display, a visit to the Catfish Row Museum: a cultural heritage experience that highlights the unique and diverse aspects of Vicksburg, or take a plane ride at the Southern Heritage Air Museum.

A Haven For Hobbyists

Beverage connoisseurs will feel at home in the Biedenharn Coca-Cola® Museum. Within this historic building, visitors will find exhibits showcasing the origins of Coca-Cola® along with the history of the Biedenharn family, who first bottled the famed soft drink in Vicksburg in 1894.

The Catfish Row Museum, featuring a series of ever-changing exhibits, is in the Christian and Brough Building in downtown Vicksburg at 913 Washington Street directly across from the Lower Mississippi River Museum.  Constructed in 1905, the building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a Mississippi Landmark.
