Top Photo Op Spots in Vicksburg, MS

With the advent of the camera phone, photography has become more accessible than ever. In fact, the average American now takes about 150 photos a month. As both DSLR cameras and camera phones improve, there’s more reason than ever before to capture the best moments of every trip in stunning images. If you’re planning a visit to Vicksburg, don’t forget your camera – with historical sites, natural beauty, and incredible artwork, you’re sure to snap more than a few shots. Here, Visit Vicksburg brings you up to speed on some of the top photo spots in Vicksburg.

Mississippi River Wildlife

Let your photography show off your adventurous spirit by taking your camera to the mighty Mississippi. The great outdoors draws hundreds of visitors to Vicksburg each year, and the wildlife photography is unbeatable. The subjects may not always cooperate, but be patient. You may just snap a shot of a bald eagle feasting on fish by the river’s edge or a picture of an alligator sunbathing on the shore. When you show off your photos back home, friends and family will love to see animals that you can’t typically find in a backyard. If you’re an avid birder, you’ll enjoy taking photos of one of the hundreds of bird species that frequent the Mississippi Delta.

Capture History – and Canine Candids

Vicksburg played a key role in the American Civil War. It was right here on July 4, 1863, that the Siege of Vicksburg ended with the Confederates surrendering their last major stronghold to Ulysses S. Grant. The Vicksburg National Military Park offers living history events, which include musket and cannon demonstrations with Civil War actors. This is the perfect opportunity to snap photos that feel like you took a step back into history. There are over 1,400 monuments and memorials to see as well, each providing a unique opportunity to take a photo that honors the rich story of the area.

Do you like taking pictures with your furry friend? Bring your pup to the Vicksburg National Military Park and get him certified in the B.A.R.K. program, which teaches responsible dog handling in the park. If your dog completes the program, he will be sworn in as a B.A.R.K. Ranger and receive a special tag, which is a picture-perfect opportunity to show off your canine family member.

A Mural to Remember

Sometimes the difference between a decent picture and a memorable photo is a little art, and Vicksburg is home to a blossoming art scene, including the Riverfront Murals. Robert Dafford’s 32 life-like pictorial murals showcase periods of history in Vicksburg for a creative journey through the ages. There is also an abstract mural by Vicksburg artist Martha Ferris, which was the first mural created on the floodwall in 2001. It pays homage to three vital elements of Vicksburg’s diversity: the river, the railroad, and the highway. Snap away as you walk along the riverfront taking in the water and the art around you. While you’re downtown, check out the Wings on Washington murals as well, located along the Margaritaville parking garage.

Mississippi River Sunsets

If you’re a fan of nature photography, or just a fan of sunsets, Vicksburg offers some great vantage points to take that perfect sunset photo along the Mississippi. The city features two scenic overlooks on the river, Louisiana Circle and Navy Circle, both of which are prime locations for snapping a few pics. In addition, 10 South Rooftop Bar and Grill and the Mississippi Welcome Center will provide you with stunning views that are Instagram-worthy.
