At the Vicksburg-Tallulah Regional Airport, the runway is home to some very difference aircraft than the modern passenger planes we’re used to seeing today. Visitors can ride in authentic warbirds from World War II and learn about the exciting history of aviation. If you’re interested in planning a trip to the Southern
Heritage Air Museum, Visit Vicksburg can help.
Take Flight in Vintage Military Aircraft
Aviation has come a long way from when planes were first
invented. A lot of major innovations took place during the World War II era,
when military forces took to the skies to rescue wounded soldiers, deliver
supplies, attack enemy forces and transport troops and personnel back and
forth.
At the Southern Heritage Air Museum, you’ll get to learn all
about some of those pivotal advancements in aviation. Hear real accounts from
war heroes and local veterans. You’ll also get to check out real vintage
airplanes—and even ride in them, too. The museum has several well-maintained
aircraft, including a 1942 North American T-6 Texan, a plane that was used to
train pilots during the war, and a 1944 North American Beech D18S. Educational
tours are available as field trips for school children.
Best Times to Go
The Southern Heritage Air Museum is open Wednesday –
Saturday, 10 AM to 4 PM from March through October and open Wednesday – Friday,
10 AM to 4 PM in November. Stop by during these hours to immerse yourself in
the world of WWII aviation. To make your trip even more special, we recommend
going to one of museum’s air shows or events.
Every other year, on the even years (2016, 2018, etc.) they
host the “Best Little Air Show” where aerobatic experts soar through the air.
Military aircraft and vehicles are on display and special guests and live
entertainment make the day that much more exciting for aviation enthusiasts.
Families are also welcome to enjoy the kid play zone. In addition to the air show, the museum puts on other events throughout the year. Check their calendar to see what’s coming up.
The museum is closed from Thanksgiving to March 1st,
but tours are still available by appointment.
